“This photo shoot was made to celebrate my 30th birthday. Just a romantic day with my husband by the beach…here by the Jersey Shore. And a selection of all of our favorite desserts made by me in shades of pink and golden accents.
We enjoy having picnics by the beach, our first dates were at the beach and even our wedding proposal was there…so it was a no brainer to celebrate my special birthday alone by the beach.”

How cool is this 80′S ROCK STAR 30TH BIRTHDAY PARTY submitted by Laura Harper of My Pookie Designs! So many totally awesome ideas!
Here is what Laura had to say about planning the party- “My sister-in-law asked me to do a party for one of my dbrothers who turned the big 30. It was fun to combine two themes together, 80′s and Rock Star. I chose neon and black for the color scheme, because what’s more fun and totally rockin’ than neon!?
On the dessert table, there were: microphone push pops made with chocolate pudding, snickers, whipped cream, brownies and crushed Oreos (so fun and so scrumptious), drum sticks (pretzel rods), black sixlets, California Raisins (picture pasted on mini raisin boxes), Pop Rocks, rock candy, and my personal favorite, Rock Star drinks with custom labels I designed. LOVE how they turned out, the picture of my brother couldn’t be more perfect. I liked the idea to have a place for people to write their name so they don’t forget which drink is theirs.
Tin pails were used as containers and stands. There were simple black tablecloths sprinkled with silver stars, and a backdrop covered in neon shapes- even Pac Man! Pretty simple set up, but the details made all the difference including the beacon, disco and party lights!
We had a photo op with inflatable guitars, glasses, neon bracelets plus some totally rockin’ 80′s styles! There was an inflatable air guitar contest for the kids in which they were all rated by judges (they all got a 10 of course) and received a trophy stuffed with candy. I also designed some fun VIP Backstage Passes for everyone to wear. We jammed all night long to 80′s rock music, Rock band and karaoke! Everyone had a blast!”

Here’s what Charlene said about the party- “Planning my 30th birthday was interesting. I really wanted it to be a little different and whimsical. I have been fond of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland since I was younger, and I really liked the Tim Burton Version of it as well. I love mushrooms and funky objects so what better theme than this? I love the vintage look and bright colors somehow combined well together. All the party props and decor were provided by www.chakodadesign.com so that part was pretty easy!
Sweet tooth by Abby, made my delicious pastries, the cutest cake pops, and just beautifully detailed Eat me cookies, and playing cards! So talented! I’m jealous of all her wonderful ability to bake and make it look like a piece of art. My photographer Angel (Angel G Photography)
was brilliant in capturing the smallest details that were really important to me, and all the effort I put into this design setup! Thank you Angel for putting this day and all my memories in a bottle for years to remember. My photobooth was by Party4beauty- Crystal was such a sweetheart, and much fun to work with. She customized my prints exactly like the design on my invitation for guests to take home. Photobooths are so much fun to have at any event, they really bring out the silliness in the quietest or most shy person. I love them!
I always like to set up at least 2 days beforehand especially since there were a lot of large items I was going to display, however with the unexpected rain, I couldn’t place any of my items out, which really made me kind of nervous. I waited until the next day to see if the rain had dried out most of my yard, only to find that it had rained the whole night before. I now started to panic! My backyard was a muddy swamp. I knew I had to move quickly with plan B (no idea whatsoever). Well, common sense was to put up canopy tents so that my guests would not get wet! I can’t handle looking at plastic tents, so I tried to cover up the inside with a backdrop.
Before I knew it it was almost 6pm! I hurried to call my hairstylist to see what time she would come, little to find out that she had to take her mom to the emergency room, due to some pain she was having. She cancelled on me! I didn’t think things could get worse, as it started to pour rain. I was feeling like I was going to pass out on the floor and then wake up to have a nervous breakdown after! I finally snapped out of it, jumped in the shower and tried to put myself together. One of my friends came to the rescue to put the faux eyelashes on me. (thanks Raquel). When I finally was ready, the DJ had already gotten there and finished setting up, and the photographer was already snapping away at all my party! Things felt a little better! Guests started to arrive. I could breathe again. The night was a success despite the rain. My guests had a blast taking pictures at the photobooth, with the props that were set out. We danced
the night away. After midnight, the music ended, (being courteous to my neighbors) bringing the party inside and continuing until 4:30 in the morning. I thought that was something people just say to describe the party as crazy! However a lot of my guests actually really left at that time. You have to remember that I’m the mommy of a 3 year old, so things are a lot different than my prior life. All my guests and vendors absolutely loved the party and design setup! A couple of my vendors said that it was the best party they had ever been to and it was “theme park status”. Wow, I was so excited! My birthday was over -I and many of my friends will remember this for a long time! (I guess I really got what I wanted- my 30th birthday was actually crazy) next time I will be a little bit more specific to what I actually want. My march hare and I ended the night cuddled together. That was definately a night to remember with all the unexpected craziness! I really hope you enjoy reading my adventure and I loved sharing it with all of you.”

Then be sure to make milestone birthdays memorable for your loved ones.It’s Jen Carver, from Banner Events, here to share a few bullet-proof principles of party design to help you kick up your next adult birthday celebration a notch or two.
How to Make Milestone Birthdays Memorable:
Turning 40, 50 or 60? Who said hitting these milestones has to be the pits? Milestone birthday celebrations will always be en vogue, and celebrating a 40th birthday can be the bees knees for both the guest of honor and party goers with a little planning, someswanky party props, costumes & décor and of course, delicious food & drinks.
First: Choose a Theme!
Or better yet, let the theme choose you! Choosing a theme doesn’t have to be difficult. Grab a pen and paper & quickly jot down a few things related to the guest of honor. The list could include things like his/her job, interests, hobbies, talents, and goals–really anything from which you can derive a theme. Once you have your initial list, do some additional brainstorming, being sure to add some ideas of how you might transform this simple idea into an overall theme. (Things you should consider: invitation, party decor, food & drink, favors, entertainment & music.)
To illustrate this principle:
A fabulously creative client recently helped her husband bid farewell to his roaring 30s with a 1920s style gangster themed surprise party attended by his closest friends and family. Who doesn’t get excited about the thought of zoot suits, wing tips, cloche hats, feather boas & fedoras? This theme was decided upon after a few quick questions which revealed that the guest of honor was a huge fan of the popular game Mafia Wars. Quickly, ideas for food (Italian pasta bar) and drink (self-serve Mockarita bar) were scratched on paper & a theme started to take shape. With the basics in place, additional brainstorming was done to tie little details to the main theme (more on that in Step 3).
Second: Set the Stage
Of course, setting the stage for an unforgettable evening is a must and sending out the perfect invitations is a great way for guests to catch a glimpse of all of the fun that is to come . Custom paperie is a popular & affordable party trend which not only allows for more personal expression than many store bought invitations and decor provide, but also affords one the ability to completely coordinate all of the little details that take an event from ordinary to extraordinary.
For this event, gorgeous Art Deco inspired invitations & party printables were created by the talented Dolly Robison of Paper Perfection. Photo booth tickets were included as a small enclosure with the invitation and were a clever way of encouraging guests to dress the part.
“Come as a flapper or come as you are.
Dress as a gangster or a silent screen star.
It’s going to be fun no matter the dress.
Just bring yourself. I’ll do the rest.”
Third: Pair Well-Planned Details with Your Theme
You did your homework in step 1, now don’t forget to put it to good use. Let your creativity take center stage as you insert fun theme coordinating details into your event. Here are a few of the clever & festive details we incorporated.
· The party area was decorated to resemble a 1920′s style ‘Clip Joint’ (gentleman’s club).
· We added some intrigue as guests arrived, by decorating the entry way. Our entry door featured a 1920′s style WANTED poster picturing the guest of honor, modeled after an Al Capone poster from that era. A faux metal beaded curtain from Event Decor Direct hung at the door to immediately give that club vibe.
· Once inside, the seating and dining areas were dressed up with red feather boas (PartyFeathers.com) & fedora hats from Windy City Novelties. They served as part of the decor, but also functioned as wardrobe accessories for guests to use in the photo booth and take-home as a party favor.
· Water bottles were dressed with printed “Mafia Water” labels, some ribbon & a little bling.
· While this theme lends itself to several fun variations & many may choose to play up the Prohibition angle with a Speak Easy & “Boot Leg” bar, my friends preferred a non-alcoholic approach. We offered a self-serve mocktail bar. Sugar rimmed martini glasses from WebStaurantStore embellished with drink flags, filled silver trays. Guests enjoyed being able to quench their thirst throughout the night, sipping yummy mocktails through festive striped straws from Hey Yo Yo.
· We wanted to offer guests appetizers they ‘couldn’t refuse’ that still corresponded with the theme, but also made for a lovely presentation. Caprese skewers, fruit kabobs & Italian stuffed mushrooms (not pictured) foot the bill!
· Big, gorgeous ostrich feather center piece kits from Wholesale Event Solutions were effortlessly assembled (thanks to their free online tutorial) and added that “wow” factor that kept guests reminiscing of an earlier era.
· Chocolate bullets were creatively packaged as take home favors. Every gangster needs a few spare ‘slugs’.
· Guest of honor sweet treat favorites were incorporated into the dessert table. Including lemon cupcakes with white frosting and ornate fondant toppers designed by Brenda of Sugar High Inc., chocolate parfaits, Hot Tamales, Cinnamon bears, chocolate dipped Rice Krispy treats, & Oreo truffles.
· Entertainment included several theme appropriate games (‘Pockets, Purses & Wallets’-Gangster style & ’10 Fingers’) a tribute video, 1920s era music and a photo booth which provided a fun way for guests to remember the night! It was stocked with funny props & costumes.
·The guest of honor had a custom designed shirt (Naughty Stitches) to don at his surprise party. We thought the gangster silhouette was particularly appropriate!
Fourth: Be a guest at your own event!
You’ve put in the work; now don’t forget to enjoy yourself! Relax. Smile. Laugh. Your guests will follow your lead. I love that my friend & her husband (the guest of honor) were found having fun with photo booth props (like the fedora hats from Windy City Novelties and feather boas from PartyFeathers) in the photo booth, laughing with guests & enjoying their own food & desserts.”

I love the idea of a party theme based around the classic book and movie of The Great Gatsby! This wedding table is so impressive and has so many ideas. I love that it has so much sparkle and glam.
This is what Kisha said about the party- “Centered around the 1920′s glitz and glamour this wedding table is packed with cute personal cakes monogrammed with the bride and grooms initials,memories from their dating days,hat boxes,jewelry and lots of sparkle. I incorporated two DIY projects. One project is a broach bouquet collected from family broaches and the other is a glitter wine bottle that I think turned out super cute and was so easy to make. I also added favor|gifts for the bridal party that included smoking jacket scented candles, a homemade hair clip adorned with feathers (1920′s) a silver bracelet used as a bridesmaid corsage and a gift for the men, striped socks gifted inside a mason jar. The glassware on the table included ones with chalkboard rings around them to display cute sayings or the guests name. The brides long gloves added to the decor and picture frames displayed poems to the bride from the groom and their engagement newspaper announcement. There are so many details to this reception table.”

This is what Suzanne said about planning the party- “Since my birthday is the 3rd of July, you can imagine that every birthday is always a red, white, and blue! This time however, I decided it would be really fun to do a red, white, and celebrate theme. I have always loved the red, white, and blue combination as well as stars, so I decided to have a little fun with theme and to based the theme around the star and made it a focal point. My sweet friend Stevie Creative Designer for Shop Sweet Lulu helped me do the design and layout of the star and the whole theme just came together. The dessert table consisted of a beautiful red, white and blue petal cake, work of art cookies from Salsa Sweets, red, white and blue chocolate covered pretzels, candy and what 4th of July celebration wouldn’t be complete without some sparkle and pizzazz like the red, white, and blue chocolate covered oreos by earth and sugar. We also had a little mini table topped with party favors, such as sparkly marshmallow wands, glow necklaces, bubbles, and decorated little mini water bottles. The main table was decorated with a patriotic little wagon and set the tone for a patriotic little celebration! It was a fun and patriotic day and party”!

This is what Tammy said about planning the party- “My grandmother loves baseball, for her 99th birthday present, my family took her to a minor league baseball game. Which led to her birthday theme, Having a Ball at 99! I found a bucket of pink baseballs on Amazon and some adorable frames in pink, red and aqua at Michaels, which determined the color scheme. I wanted to make the theme vintage, since she loves old greeting card art. I found the cutest clipart of a baseball girl on etsy and incorporated her into the printables. The highlight of the party was a generations baseball game at the farm (GG’s Field of Dreams). GG threw out the first pitch. To cool down after the game, we had Ninety-Nine Bottles of ‘Root Beer’ on the wall – floats. It was a memorable day, for a take home favor for all that attended, our GG signed and dated the pink baseballs.”
